Sony's just revealed their new DualShock 4 and PlayStation 4 Eye to
everyone that tuned in to their PlayStation 2013 conference. While there
are little details about the PlayStation 4 Eye, we do have a quite a
bit for the DualShock 4.
As Sony stated at the PlayStation 4 conference, this is all about us,
the gamers. Giving control to the gamers, letting them shape the
ecosystem is what Sony's gunning for with the PlayStation 4. That vision
is most apparent when you take a look at the DualShock 4's "Share"
button and how it'll allow you to interact with your PlayStation 4.
While you're in a game - say inFAMOUS: Second Son for example - a simple
tap of the DualShock 4's Share button will allow you to livestream your
gameplay for others to view via the PlayStation 4's new User Interface,
or capture and upload recent segments of gameplay. While this
functionality isn't necessarily something unseen - OnLive has had it for
a while - it's certainly shocking that it's coming to Sony's
next-generation console.
Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will be powered by a custom
8-core AMD "Jaguar" x86-64 with integrated graphics APU and
"next-generation" AMD Radeon graphics processor capable of driving 1.84
teraflops. As detailed at the event, it will come paired with 8GB of
dedicated GDDR5 memory, making it competitive with most gaming-focused
PCs on the market. As expected, the system will ship with a Blu-ray
drive, built-in 80.211 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as HDMI,
Analog-AV, and optical digital output. Sony is giving I/O options a
boost with the inclusion of USB 3.0 ports and a mysteriously vague "AUX"
port. Each system will ship a "Mono Headset" for cross-game chat and
other social features.
